For a company with seven stores nationwide, Jack Spade has done a stellar job at making each shop feel like a one-off boutique. Walking into the newly expanded Greene Street spot feels like stepping into a big kid’s clubhouse: among the trappings are giant tin planes, snappily clad scarecrows, taxidermied goats, books teaching you how to talk to birds (and other woodland creatures) and little figurines that pop up on every available surface. It’s obvious that this Mr. Spade is both a hoarder and a born merchandiser, and that his natural inclination for fun is paying off.
The clothing reflects the boutique and its made-with-love feeling. There’s no doubt it’s mass-produced — besides those seven namesake stores, the brand is stocked in 18 countries worldwide and at a number of online juggernauts — but it feels like it was constructed by a bunch of cool, gossiping machine workers in Brooklyn. The store supervisor Lenard Smith greets his customers by name; the sports coats come tailored in sturdy herringbones that look like they were shipped in from Scotland; hand-knit dragon hats sit alongside their matching mitten puppets.
